Introduction
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive endovenous treatment for varicose veins that uses radiofrequency energy to heat and permanently close the affected vein. It is performed under local anaesthesia as a day procedure, without general anaesthesia or surgical incisions. For a complete overview of all varicose vein treatments, see: Varicose Veins Treatment in Hyderabad.
💡 How Does RFA Work?
A specially designed catheter is inserted into the affected vein through a needle puncture under ultrasound guidance. Tumescent local anaesthesia is applied around the vein. The RFA catheter delivers precisely controlled radiofrequency energy at 120°C in short 20-second cycles as it is withdrawn. This heats the vein wall uniformly and causes it to collapse and seal. The body then gradually absorbs the treated vein over the following weeks.
🔄 RFA vs Laser (EVLT): Key Differences
Both RFA and EVLT achieve the same goal — permanent endovenous closure — and have comparable long-term efficacy. The key differences are technical:
- Energy type: RFA uses radiofrequency waves; EVLT uses laser light
- Bruising: RFA typically causes slightly less post-procedure bruising than older laser systems
- Both are performed under local (tumescent) anaesthesia as day procedures
- Both achieve closure rates above 90% at 5 years

✅ Benefits of RFA
- Walk-in, walk-out day procedure
- Local anaesthesia only — no general anaesthesia risk
- No surgical incisions or stitches
- Typically less bruising than laser in some patients
- Immediate mobilisation — walk immediately after procedure
- Return to work within 1–2 days
- Proven long-term efficacy in extensive clinical trials
🏥 Recovery After RFA
Recovery after RFA is very similar to laser treatment. Wear the compression stocking for 2–4 weeks. Walk regularly from day one. Avoid heavy exercise for 2–3 weeks. Most patients return to desk work within 1–2 days. A follow-up Duplex ultrasound at 1 week confirms successful vein closure. 🙋🏻♂️ Frequently Asked Questions
Is RFA better than laser for varicose veins?
Both are excellent treatments with comparable long-term outcomes. The choice depends on your vein anatomy, the treating surgeon’s expertise, and equipment availability. I select the most appropriate technique for each individual patient based on their Duplex ultrasound findings.
Is RFA painful?
The tumescent anaesthetic injections cause temporary stinging — similar to dental injections. Once the leg is numb, the RFA treatment itself is painless. Post-procedure, mild aching and tightness along the treated vein are normal and resolve within a few days.
Is RFA covered under insurance?
Yes. RFA for symptomatic varicose veins is covered under most major health insurance policies in India. Our team will assist with the pre-authorisation process.
🔑 Key Insights
RFA and EVLT are equally effective first-line treatments for varicose veins. The right choice is the one your surgeon recommends based on your individual vein anatomy and their experience.
