The patients who do best after surgery are usually the ones who asked the most questions beforehand.

I’d rather spend an extra ten minutes in consultation answering questions than have a patient walk into the operating theatre unsure of what’s about to happen. Whether you’re facing a day-care varicose vein procedure or a major aortic repair, these are the questions worth asking — and a good surgeon should welcome all of them.
🩺 About the Diagnosis and Options
- What exactly is my diagnosis, and what test confirmed it?
- What happens if I don’t have this procedure now?
- Are there non-surgical options, and why is surgery being recommended over them?
- Is this an open procedure, an endovascular (catheter-based) one, or a combination — and why that approach specifically for me?
⚙️ About the Procedure Itself
- How many of these procedures do you perform in a year?
- What type of anaesthesia will I need — local, regional, or general?
- How long will the procedure take, and how long will I be in hospital?
- What are the specific risks for someone with my health profile (diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.)?
- What happens if the planned approach doesn’t work during the procedure — is there a backup plan, and can it be carried out in the same session?
🏡 About Recovery and Follow-Up
- What does recovery actually look like week by week?
- When can I resume driving, work, and exercise?
- What symptoms after the procedure should prompt me to call immediately, versus wait for my follow-up?
- Will I need ongoing surveillance (regular ultrasounds, scans) after this, and for how long?
- Who do I contact after hours if something feels wrong?
💳 Practical Questions
- Can I have a written cost estimate covering the procedure, hospital stay, and likely follow-up?
- Is this covered under my insurance, and has pre-authorisation been arranged?
❓ FAQ
Is it rude to ask a surgeon so many questions?
Not at all — a confident, competent surgeon expects and welcomes these questions. If you feel rushed or discouraged from asking, that itself is useful information.
Should I bring someone with me to the consultation?
I’d recommend it, especially for a major procedure. A second person often remembers details you miss in the moment, and it helps to have someone else who heard the same explanation directly from me.
💡 Key Insight: Write your questions down before the appointment. In the moment, it’s easy to forget half of them — a written list ensures you leave with real answers, not just reassurance.
